Why rebuild your Porsche engine?
There are two reasons why Porsche drivers choose to rebuild their engines: performance upgrades or technical issues.
Keeping your vehicle well maintained with regular Porsche servicing should go without saying, but part of the joy of owning these vehicles is to improve them over the years, fine-tuning the various systems and untapping their true potential. These upgrades don’t always come at a huge cost. Relatively speaking, extra performance can often be awarded to those willing to make small investments. Capacity increases and cam swaps are two such upgrades which can lead to good improvements, especially if the existing parts are worn or a little damaged.
Technical issues are something that every vehicle will come up against at some point in their lifespans, and Porsches are no exception. Aircooled engines (which were fitted in all 911s up to 1998) can suffer from valve guide wear, due to the heat that’s produced by the system. Vehicles that are used for commuting or only travel short distances at a time can be susceptible to this issue which is manifested as smoking on startup.
Vehicles that have been stood for a while can also develop this issue, which requires a top-end strip, new guides, check and measure of valves for wear, and recut the valve seats in the cylinder heads to ensure optimal sealing. A top-end refresh can return factory fresh performance, as leaking guides and worn piston rings can dilute the combustion mixture, leading to poor performance

What is your rebuild process?
Almost every engine rebuild is different, but our overall process is a good guide to how we work with our customers’ vehicles. In every case, we’ll be sure to keep you informed about the progress and meticulously document the engine rebuild with photographs and tolerance record sheet.
- An initial consultation will determine future use, budget and specification to be achieved.
- We require an initial deposit upon instruction (normally 30%), then depending upon the build, we can take stage payments or balance on completion. There are also finance options available for high budget builds if required.
- If the vehicle is present for the rebuild, we like to carry out the ‘bedding-in’ procedure in-house. This would entail running in oil installed, and we then drive the vehicle 800-1200 miles to ensure optimal performance and the engine has the care and attention for future durability.
- Once the running-in period has elapsed, we would refill the oil, and depending on the model, carry out a valve clearance check and reset.
- For engines presented without the vehicle, again subject to model type, we have an engine testbed that can be used for basic tune and setup, ignition timing, fuelling and basic bedding in.
What Porsche engine rebuilds do you offer?
Top end refresh
This should be considered a partial rebuild, as both crankcase and crankshaft are left together. Minor issues such as oil leaks, valvetrain wear and snapped head studs can be fixed at a relatively small cost. Depending on the model, we can also include bore inspections and piston ring replacements.
Our stock rebuild is a comprehensive rebuild of the engine. We’ll completely strip down the engine and then meticulously assess the condition of all the parts. After cleaning these down, we’ll rebuild your engine with brand new OEM bearings, seals, gaskets, piston rings, chains and belts – giving your Porsche a completely new lease of life.
We’ve worked with enough of these vehicles to understand their weak points and where they have room for improvements. Our technicians can completely rebuild your engine with a host of modifications that reinforce weak areas and increase power output. Does Tech 9 provide a warranty for the rebuilt engine?
We provide a 12-month warranty on all of our engine rebuilds covering oil-leaks and failures (not including crank or con-rod failures on top-end refreshes).

How much does it cost to rebuild a Porsche engine?
The cost to rebuild a Porsche engine varies in price according to the type of rebuild being undertaken, the parts involved and the labour taken to complete the work. For example, once the engine is removed from an air-cooled 911, a top-end rebuild would typically take us 18-21 days to complete, whereas a full build would take closer to 30 days. Just as every Porsche is its own beast, all our rebuilds are individually quoted. Our labour rate ranges from £79 + VAT p/hour.
Which models can you work on?
Tech 9 have spent 30 years working with a full range of these vehicles, from classic Porsche restorations to modern gems. Thanks to this experience we have a unique insight into the issues that sometimes crop up with these vehicles and are always able to provide an effective solution.
We’ve performed complete rebuilds for the most iconic classics, including the Porsche 356A, B, and C/912. We know all the various faults with these older models, including the very common engine case ovality that can be repaired by our engineering partners. Tech 9 have experience performing routine rebuilds to performance-orientated specifications with increased capacity, sport camshaft and performance exhaust.
Our racing background also makes us uniquely suited to work on high-performance vehicles. We’ve rebuilt 901 2.0 race engines with Solex Carburettors for the Peter Auto 2.0L Cup series, 911 MFI engines, RSR 3.0-3.6 and high compression 3.0 SC-based engines with 300+bhp regularly achieved.

What components do you use?
We have many bespoke Porsche parts & accessories that have been designed by us with our world-class machining partners, such as connecting rods, pistons, camshafts and bespoke exhaust systems. We can order in components specific to your needs, whether you’re racing on the circuit, rallying or taking part in an endurance event. We also have a large stock of spares to keep these engines on the road. If you’re struggling find a part that is no longer available, chances are that we have it!
What tools are at your disposal?
We use all the factory specific tools required for rebuilding these Porsche engines, one of our secrets of performance in our builds relates to the digital timing equipment that is used for cam timing. This vital piece of equipment ensures accuracy across the cylinders for optimal efficiency. Balancing combustion chambers for volume matching, and careful attention to Compression Ratio (CR) ensures that a Tech 9 engine delivers the desired performance and reliability.
