Common Porsche Engine Faults

Over the decades, we’ve seen almost every issue a Porsche engine can develop. Knowing the signs early can prevent further damage and higher repair costs. Here are the most frequent faults we encounter in our workshop, along with the rebuild solutions we provide:

  • IMS Bearing Failure: A well-known weakness in many water-cooled engines (M96/M97). Symptoms include rattling noises or sudden catastrophic failure. Our Solution: During a rebuild, we upgrade the factory bearing with a robust, permanent replacement, eliminating this failure point.
  • Bore Scoring: Common in M96/M97 engines, bore scoring presents as excessive oil consumption or knocking sounds. Left untreated, it can cause catastrophic damage. Our Solution: We completely remedy this fault by meticulously preparing the cylinders and fitting new liners to ensure a perfect piston-to-cylinder fit and long-term durability.
  • RMS (Rear Main Seal) Leaks: Oil dripping from the back of the engine is a sign of RMS seal failure. While not always critical on its own, it can lead to clutch contamination. Our Solution: We address the root cause of the leak and fit a new seal as a standard part of our comprehensive engine rebuild process.
  • Valve Guide Wear: Air-cooled engines (pre-1998) are especially prone to this issue due to high operating temperatures. Symptoms include smoke on startup or reduced performance. Our Solution: A top-end rebuild with fresh valve guides restores factory-fresh performance and eliminates smoke.
  • Cooling System Weaknesses: Water-cooled Porsche engines rely on a healthy cooling system. Failed water pumps or blocked coolant passages can lead to severe engine damage. Our Solution: As part of a full rebuild, we overhaul the entire cooling system to ensure it operates flawlessly, preventing future overheating and maintaining engine health.

Why Rebuild your Porsche Engine?

Technical Repairs & Lasting Solutions

Technical issues are inevitable over a vehicle’s lifespan, and Porsches are no exception. Common problems like IMS bearing failure, bore scoring, and worn valve guides can severely impact an engine’s health.

A full rebuild allows us to not only fix the immediate fault but to engineer a lasting solution. For example, our rebuilds address bore scoring by installing modern, durable cylinder liners, preventing the issue from reoccurring.

We can also upgrade weak components, such as the original factory IMS bearing, for enhanced long-term reliability.

Performance Upgrades & Future-Proofing

A rebuild is the perfect opportunity to upgrade and future-proof your vehicle. We can enhance your engine to deliver more power and a more responsive feel. Capacity increases and camshaft swaps are two such upgrades that can lead to significant performance improvements, especially if existing parts are worn.

By rebuilding your engine with a host of modifications, our technicians can reinforce weak areas and squeeze out extra power, ensuring your vehicle is ready for the track or simply a more exhilarating road experience.

Technical Insight — Our Engineering Approach

Our workshop in Liverpool isn’t just staffed by experienced Porsche specialists, it’s equipped with a unique blend of factory-level diagnostic tools and precision machinery that elevates every rebuild from good to exceptional. Here’s a look at the technical foundation of our work:

Advanced Diagnostic Tools

We are proud members of the Porsche Partner Network (PPN), granting us access to dealer-level diagnostic software, including Porsche PIWIS 4. This ensures we can perform full-system diagnostics, service resets, control unit communication, and precision coding with the same authority as a main dealer.

Precision Engineering & Workshop Equipment

We match Porsche’s exacting standards with state-of-the-art workshop hardware. This allows us to perform every critical task in-house, ensuring quality control from start to finish.

Our workshop equipment includes:

  • Six Vehicle Lifts
These allow us to safely access every angle of your Porsche’s engine and drivetrain. With full underbody clearance, we can remove engines efficiently and reinstall them with precision, minimising downtime and ensuring accurate refit.
  • Beissbarth 4-Wheel Alignment Machine
After an engine rebuild or removal, correct suspension geometry is essential. Our Beissbarth system delivers factory-level chassis calibration, guaranteeing that your Porsche handles exactly as Stuttgart intended.
  • Pro-Cut On-Vehicle Disc Lathe
This machine resurfaces brake discs directly on the car, restoring braking performance during complete engine or restoration projects. It ensures your rebuilt Porsche engine is paired with equally sharp stopping power.
  • MIG and TIG Welding Facilities

What is our Engine Rebuild Process?

Almost every engine rebuild is different, but our overall process is a good guide to how we work with our customers’ vehicles. In every case, we’ll be sure to keep you informed about the progress and meticulously document the engine rebuild with photographs and tolerance record sheet.

  • Step 1 – An initial consultation will determine future use, budget and specification to be achieved.
  • Step 2 – We require an initial deposit upon instruction (normally 30%), then depending upon the build, we can take stage payments or balance on completion. There are also finance options available for high budget builds if required.
  • Step 3 – If the vehicle is present for the rebuild, we like to carry out the ‘bedding-in’ procedure in-house. This would entail running in oil installed, and we then drive the vehicle 800-1200 miles to ensure optimal performance and the engine has the care and attention for future durability.
  • Step 4 – Once the running-in period has elapsed, we would refill the oil, and depending on the model, carry out a valve clearance check and reset.

We use all the factory specific tools required for rebuilding these Porsche engines, one of our secrets of performance in our builds relates to the digital timing equipment that is used for cam timing. This vital piece of equipment ensures accuracy across the cylinders for optimal efficiency. Balancing combustion chambers for volume matching, and careful attention to Compression Ratio (CR) ensures that a Tech 9 engine delivers the desired performance and reliability.

Generally, most of our engine rebuilds are a six-week process, from removal from the vehicle to re-fitting. There are various factors that can elongate the process, such as the bedding in period and potential rolling road tuning, if there are any upgrades involved. Contact us to find out more about how long your individual case may take.

There are a few things you should look out for, which are common indicators that your engine needs to be repaired or replaced including oil leaks, smoking or rattles on start-up.

However, a lot of clients visit us for engine rebuilds to enhance their driving performance on the road, with higher quality components, or performance-optimised parts.

Signs that suggest a repair only might be sufficient include minor oil leaks, worn gaskets, singular valve guide wear on an air-cooled head, or a failing auxiliary item like the water pump or timing chain tensioner.

However, consider a full or top-end rebuild if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • Unusual noises (knocking, tapping, or rattling) from the engine bay.
  • Excessive blue smoke on startup, often linked to valve guide wear or ring seal issues.
  • High oil consumption over short mileage, which may indicate internal wear like bore scoring.
  • Metallic debris in oil or strainers, a common early sign of IMS or bearing failure.
  • Failed oil pressure, overheating, or sudden loss of power, these often point to internal component damage that repairs alone can’t fix.
  • If in doubt, we recommend a comprehensive diagnostic assessment first. We’ll examine whether a targeted repair will suffice or if a rebuild offers a better long-term investment.

With a high-quality rebuild using Porsche-approved or equivalent components, proper machining, and thorough setup, a build can easily deliver 100,000+ miles of reliable service, assuming standard maintenance is followed.

Factors that affect longevity include:

  • Usage type: Track-driven cars may require more frequent servicing, but our bedding-in and testing processes help mitigate early wear.
  • Maintenance: Regular oil and filter changes, along with scheduled inspections, preserve engine health.
  • Quality of parts and workmanship: We use OEM or equivalent parts and pair them with precision fitting, dyno testing or road-testing, and final valve clearance checks post-running-in.

All Tech 9 rebuilds include a post-rebuild running-in procedure (800–1,200 miles) and are accompanied by documentation of the work performed, making it easier to track and maintain optimal engine life.
